Mbanza Kongo nominated for UNESCO World Heritage

Angola has nominated Mbanza Kongo for candidacy as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Histrocially, Mbanza Kongo was the capital of the Ancient Kongo Kingdom. After colonization, the Kongo was then split and became several different countries. The name and geographical location remained the same even in the face of colonization. The city itself is in ruins and can now be found inside of Angola. In 2007, Angola started a project to dig up and preserve Mbanza Kongo for the sole reason of nominating this ancient city as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2013, Angola officially made Mbanza Kongo a national cultural heritage site. There are several sub-projects ongoing and archaeological studies to be made of Mbanza Kongo. For example, Angola wishes to dig up and study "Tadi dia Bukukua" the royal palace of Mbanza Kongo. I mention all this to say that a location so relevant to our traditional religion of Nkisi Malongo is up for consideration as a World Heritage Site and has been on the mind and soul of many people.
